![]() ![]() We played a new-to-me variant of the game that included two new roles I'd not seen before: a False Commander on the spies' side, and a Rogue Resistance player. We only had eight for most of the first day as one of our attendees had something come up at the last minute and couldn't make it until late Friday evening. Of course we kicked off the weekend with an all-in eight-player game of Resistance. For this event we all just started with an empty bag, and instead of having different types of dice we just got to take dice from a common pool for our victories and the dice total was counted at the end. Since we had plenty more room to spread out, everyone to man felt comfortable going maskless for the weekend.Ĭhris also modified the traditional CabinCon meta game in the past each player was given a personal dice bag with a set number of "honor" versus "shame" dice in it, and the victor of each game during the weekend would be reaching into each loser's bag to take one of their dice. We'd also all brought masks to wear, but the original plan had been to bring our own tables and game in the cottages, which would have been much closer quarters. We'd brought enough hand sanitizer to have a bottle at every gaming table and one at either end of the food table. We did our best to keep things as safe as possible. ![]() It had a large screen-in porch and a pretty big dining area where we could set up our piles of games, food, and play. We barely spent any time in the cottages anyway, since the retreat center, at the last minute, offered us the use of the large commons building right next to our cottages. We had two cottages reserved with enough bunks to sleep 18, so we all got our pick of bottom bunks to sleep on. We got back on the road around 9:00 and arrived at the retreat center shortly after our check-in time of 9:30. However, most of the gang was coming from the Harrisburg area and their route took them right through York already, so they stopped to pick me up on the way. My family is still getting by with only one vehicle, so I couldn't drive myself to the event, even though it was only about 40 minutes from home. We'd have to find a different venue, and many of our regulars still wouldn't feel comfortable joining in, but a poll indicated that we might be able to bring together a small group of 10-12 guys for a Cabin Con Reboot, or as we playfully began calling it, the September Sleepover with Sirs.Ī fairly affordable venue was found at a retreat center in Airville, PA-the funds we'd already contributed to the April event went towards it along with some additional to cover the higher cost being split between fewer people-we ultimately wound up with nine attending. However, over the past few months as we've seen the social gathering restrictions ease up just a bit, Chris broached the subject of possible holding a "make-up" event in September. There was no way we could hold our usual event in a safe, responsible way, so with great reluctance Chris, our organizer, cancelled it. Another of our members is a heart transplant survivor, and must take extreme precautions during this pandemic since he is particularly at-risk to the virus. ![]() ![]() At that point one of our own had already contracted COVID-19 and spent weeks in the hospital, thankfully surviving the experience. The group of Harrisburg and Phildelphia-area gamers that I've been attending a Cabin Con with for the past several years had to cancel our annual April event this year, for clear and obvious reasons. This past weekend I attended what will most likely be my last and only gaming "convention" of the year, aside from Gamers of Winter which took place last January before the pandemic hit. ![]()
